Evaluation and Analysis

  • In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My media product uses, challenges and develops conventions of a real music video, CD package and magazine advert.

My music video follows and abides by the rules of a real music video, my music video has a narrative genre music video where it shows in complicating Act 1, the artist as like all musican's who starts of with nothing and is shown in his bedroom, writing lyrics, rapping, practising beats on a keyboard, on his computer and rapping into a microphone. Complicating Act 2 consits of him walking around the streets which is a place associated with rappers and they practise and rap on the street, he is shown walking and the audience can see he is heading somewhere but are unaware of where, until complicating Act 3 where he is shown rapping at a gig. Perfroming live infront of his fans rapping lyrics we had seen previously and what we had seen him practising and producing in the first scene. This shows he has finally made it and although it is tough to get to where he is, he was jsut liek everyone else and started off with nothing and had to make and write everything for him self and he had a break and now is rapping infront of hundreds and has a fans, which many future artists dream of just as he did.

Throughout i use a number of camera shots (medium shot, close up, cut zoom in, cut zoom out) angles (low angle, high angle etc.) and edited it together mainly using cross dissolves which is most oftenly used but i have also used other editing methods such as the wipe left and wipe right in certain stages where the tempo is quick in the song and also used a circle open edit where the beginning of a clip is zoomed in on the checkered shirt and it zooms out which i believe to look a very proffesional clip and the editing fits in with the clip/image. I have made sure all of my shots are not longer than 5 seconds to reduce the audience from getting bored. I have taken a number of different shots from different angles and edited them together abiding by the 180 degree rule, all of these things allow the music video to continue it's continuity and look more like a real music video, instead of just having long and seady shots for a 5-10 seconds, having lots of shots and angles, edited well together improve the quality of the video.

For the lighting i have changed all of the footage to be in black and white as this is to show the past and when the artist was first making his music and inspired to be well known and recognised for his music liek his heros in music, which it shows a shot of. The shots then show him practising in his bedroom, younger pictures of him as a boy. Then it moves on to the artist walking throught the streets and is it clear to the audience that he is heading somewhere but it is not know to the audience until the last scene, where he is at a gig and playing infront of all of his fans showing he has know become well known and recognised for his music, the gig photoage is in colour as this is the present and also the happy side of the story, showing that he was jsut liek any other rapper where it all started on the street and the bedroom and he got his break through and is now doing gigs and live perfromances for his fans.

I have challenged the conventions of a real music video, and edited the lighting not only to make the quality of the clip clearer due to the quality of camera i used was not that great but mainly as the black and white is to represent the past and when complicated Act 3 starts it is in colour to show the present and also the happy side of the story to show the audience he has made it and had a break in the music industry with his music, showing it is possible for young hopefulls.
At the beginning of the music video the bedroom part i edited the lighting and made all of the clips the same saturation and colour to make sure the clips went together and it looked well edited to keep a good continuity throughout, because if different saturations and colours where used the clips would not go together causing the audience to recognise this and think something is wrong or it is poorly edited.
My music video follows a strong narrative as it is almost about his music career and life, it shows how he started and now where he is in his young future of his music career and this also encourages other young rappers to carry on and not give up and that some day you may have a break just liek my artist and liek many others.

I also have followed Andrew Godwins theory this is where the video clip represents the lyrics of the song e.g. in my video when it mentions my granma looking down on me and my sister it shows a shot of a painting of me and my sister, this to represent my grandma looking on us and watching what we do just as the lyrics in the song say. This also is the idea of editing the clips with the mood and beat of song and not just the lyrics, so when the chorus kicks in especialy at the end the shots are alot quicker at the gig footage and this is to keep up with the quick rapping in the chorus.

Propps theory, I have only included one character and this is the hero. But music can be seen as the doner as he is tested by making music which is shown in act 1, act 2 is where the hero leaves home and into an unknown destination (absentation), with act 3 the hero is recognised and signing his own song (recognition).

The CD package follows the rules of and looks like a real similar media text, the front cover involves one main image of the artist who is viewed in close up, the image takes up a large percentage of the front cover.
I have edited it and changed the lighting of the image to make him stand out more and improve the quality and any fauts with the image, e.g. hair out of place.

The masterhead it situated at the top of the page in a large, bold font. Here it shows the name of the artist 'Just Muz' and the albums name ' Soulfull Stuff'', it has been presented in creative font with a outer glow and large spread which enables it to stick out which is exactly what it needs to do to catch the eye of it's audience. Many CD cover albums have large basic writting as it is more easy to read but i believe that it is still easily read but just aids the front cover having a glow and using a unknown font. I also have used text on the side of the front cover, this is known as a subheading/subtitle which alot of big released albums do, mentioning their awards and success with songs in the album etc.

I have used the background throughout my front cover to keep a good level of continuity and make the front and back look as one and also the inside using the same colour on both. Also have used the same front as on the front and back to show continuity and make it look proffessional and when the CD cover is actually open both the front+back and inside cover will match and look as one.

The back cover has the basic track listing alligned to the left of the page in 1 colum, in plain basic writting that is easy to read and all track's are number. The main thing that i have used on my backcover is the black bar at the bottom this is often done and seperates the page up, here it gives information all about copyright, disribution, exhibition etc. Also presented in the bottom right hand corner is the bar code, which is out of the way not effecting the look of the cover but mine is like all CD's need to have one if wanting to sell it.

For the inside cover i have used 2 images that are not similar but i do believe it splits the inside page up nicely and seperate the CD holder and the information given about the CD. Although the images are not similar in colour i have carried on the yellow theme from the photo and used it behind the vinyl record to keep the continuity on the inside pages.

The left hand side of the inside cover uses 1 strong image of the artist and also with text wrapped around him this text informs it's audience a bit about the album, the artist and his thourght on the lyrics, songs and album. The CD vinyll which i used on the other page i thought was a very clever idea it has not been done before and was my own creativity this represents where the CD will sit when not being used, it is clever as using a vinyll record is very ironic as this was how listening to music started but it has now all evolved with CD's being used and now even digital songs rather than CD's.

My magazine advert follows the codes and conventions of a real music advert.
It has 1 main image that takes up most of the page, this is positioned int he centre as it is the main attraction to a poster, but i have challenged the codes and conventions as i edited the photo and used an effect on it to make it unusual and unlike many posters used in the music industry where they are normally just clear images of the artist/band, which i believe makes it stand out even more using a sketch design on the image, also this fits in with the genre and how rappers are associated with graffiti.

The master head is at the top of the page and is alligned with the image, which makes it all square and look it's best. The text at the top of the page is large with the artists name 'Just Muz' larger than the album title which is presented just underneath ' Soulful Stuff'. This text is in a pale yellow colour which is the same as the text ' available now on download' which keeps the 2/3 colours being used on a front cover.

Under the image is text all about the CD release the formats you can buy it now. The text is all basic and simple as it want to be easily read after the image and poster has caught the audiences eye. Also at the very bottom of the page in small text is the artists website, company and who helped make it etc.

One thing that i did copy from music magazine adverts was the idea of showing the CD cover on the page as many adverts have their CD cover or photo used on it as their main image for the advert, i did not go along with this idea but did have the CD package on the bottom right hand corner which gave the read to see it and known what it looks like in case they want to go out and buy it knowing what it looks like is a great help.

  • How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
All of my products have a link and all fit in well together. They all feature the same person keeping the continutiy which is very important as getting actors in a video could cost and i feel does not have the same impact on it's audience if the artist/band are not used in their own music video.

My CD cover and magazine advert has used the same text as it is very creative and eye catching so it will be easily recognised and can be related to my artist as it is unusual for a CD cover and magazine advert. Both the images i have used on my CD cover and magazine advert involve mise-en-scene such as the microphone and headphone, this suggests that music is the subject and you could tell from jut looking at the image not needing the CD cover or advert.

My music magazine advert includes the CD cover and therefore the enables the audience to see what it looks like and allows the target audience to wander into a shop to see the connection between the CD and the music magazine and also the music video and therefore this increases publicity of the product and the artist.

Mise-en-scene is very important in the music industry and we recognise clothing and relate it to a genre of music, for example skinny jeans are related to indie music. In my case rappers are associated with girls, money, jewellary, drugs etc but this is more the american opinion and in Britain we recognise rappers with large headphone, studio work and not so much girls and money as not many english rappers have made it and been very successfull like in America. But more and more are now starting to get noticed and rewarded for all their work such as Chipmunk, Tinchy Styrder, Frankmusic and Akala. My music video does this and relates to rapping and living on the street which is more the life of british rappers and working hard in studios rapping and producing new music and even recording if successfull, and even performing live at gigs and concerts, which my music video does.
  • What have you learned from your audience feedback?
From my audience feedback i have learnt alot about my work especially the strengths and weaknesses of it, it makes me proud when hearing the successfull things about my products as i believe them to be good but i know i am biased as i was the creater of all of the products.

Hearing the advantages of other people is a good feeling but also hearing the disadvantages from my audience feedback is not that so depressing as i believe the products to be successful and hearing them make me think about how i could improve it which i did in some cases, or i explain why i did that and that does effect their thourghts on the products.

Having someone evalutating my product who had not seen me make it my self, is the best type of audience feedback i could get and also this genre of music aiming at teenagers is perfect as i am in the sixthform full of teenagers, but i did make sure i did ask people that have not been in my media class, so they have not seen the products from a step by step process as this could have an effect on there thourghts. Also i have asked peopel within my media class so they can give a more indepth analysis of the products.

In some cases it is a disadvantage though as they may not understand, how hard something may be to do and not appreciate how much time and effort, went into something that may look so simple such as the lighting of the images on the poster and CD, editing the clips where someone from my media class could talk about that in more detail.
  • How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

During my project i used a number of different softwares and media technologies.

For my music video i used the new imovie to edit all the clips together, this was hard to use at the start but once i learn't how it worked it became easy and enjoyable, the only disadvantage with using the new imovie is that it does not have many effect and the ones that are on it are very basic. I was used to the old imovie and new that it had a number of different affects and only became aware of the minimum number of effects half way through on the new imovie.

When videoing the shots for my music video i used a Panasonic SDR-S26 camera this camera was very easy to use and to transfer the clips onto the computer this was also helped as i had used it the camera before. I used a tripod to stablise the camera and make sure the camera clips were still and not shaking.

In my evaluation i used a flip camera which is a small camera that is also a USB and connect to the computer this enabled me to film the people i was asking about my project and show what areas they were talking about on my products.

Using all of these softwares and technologies, I believe that I have used all of them to a high standard and have shown a good understanding and capability with all of them. I feel that i am now improved as i have learnt how to use the new imovie and seen how technology has changed as the new imovie is very different to the old one, this is also the case with photoshop which i used. I also used the Internet to aid my project as, when I did not know or understand how to use a certain button i searched the net and looked up about the button so i had a better understanding of it and how to use it properly.

The 3 Tasks

Music Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUUNVGkcGWc

Magazine Advert

Front and Back Cover of CD Package

Inside Cover of CD Package

The Next Secondary Task

Production of the Next Secondary Task

This is my poster finished, i believe that it looks like a real music advert. The image is not that strong but i thing that due to it being not a basic simple photo it will draw more attetion and attract more people to looking at it in more detail than ignoring this specific page of many. The 3 main colours are continually used throughout with basic and clear information presented and easily read and more contacts and information accessable throught the websites at the very bottom of the page. This poster also shows what the CD cover actually looks like so the audience know and can find it easier if wanting to buy it.

This image is of the information presented on the poster it is very simple and uses key words such as 'New', 'Out Now' and 'Available' which all catch the audience eyes and makes them take an interest in the poster, as they are trying to sell it and you think if the poster is good and if you would consider buying this item.

I have used capital letter for the 3 main lines so it stand out and is easy to read. The text is all in the same font but just in different sizes and types such as the formats of what you can buy being in bold. They are seperated by a vertical line all of a different colour which adds colour to it and makes the text look more interesting and again fitting in with the different colours used in the main image. The 3rd line is in green the same green that the title was done in, this is because i found out that my research many adverts only used 3 main colours throughout there poster and so have i with them being white, black and green.

At the very bottom of the page i have again used something that i found out magazine adverts do and present information about the company, artists website etc.

At the bottom right hand corner i have shown my album cover so the viewers know what to lookout for in the shops if wanting to purchase it, this is something i thourght about and realised more people will buy it if they can recognise it that spend time looking for it not knowing what it looks like.

Here is the text i have used for my heading of my advert. From my research i found that the artists name is most important and recognisable rather than the album name, so i made sure that the artists name was larger and took up most of the master head with the album name smaller and underneath it but in the same text and colour. I used the colour green as it is recognised as a colour that stands out and catchs peoples attention, also it goes fits in with the image having lots of different strong colours used as the outline of the picture.

I addd this affect to the photo as i didnt want to use a boring photo, and also the quality of our cameras are not great and when using one that will take up alot of the page it is very pixelated and not of great quality.

This effect shows us the outline of the body and objects in the photo with lots of bright and different colours it makes the you look at it in more detail to see what it is as it is not easily seen at a glance and makes you interested and look at the advert longer than you normally would if it was just an image in colour.

This shows that althought colours are very important they can be used in many ways and not the usual with the whole picture being in colour but just the outline of the body and equipment and lots of different colours being used to show this.

This is the image i used for my magazine advert. I found out in my research that they use similar sign/photo of the actual CD cover to the advert so it is easily recognised. So I have a similar photo but not in close up like i did on my CD cover and it involves the microphone and equipment that he would actually use to record etc the correct mise-en-scene to show he is a musician.

He is doing gestures and using his hands like you would expect from a rapper and what he would naturally do when rapping whether it be on his own or to a large audience.

Planning of the Next Secondary Task

This is a simple plan of my magazine advert from my research i have found out that all adverts are simple. Their always is a strong image which takes up most of the page and is often positioned in the middle of the page. The advert normally has little but needed information to advertise the relase of the CD album and all types of format you can buy the album on such as vinyll record, digital, CD etc. Also at the bottom of the page infomation concerning websites, company and copyright.

The Secondary Task

Production of the Secondary Task

This is how the CD cover looks at the moment without the background done yet am i am struggling to find a good enough effect or pattern on the photoshop. It looks well presented and has empty space on the CD cover that makes it look boring. It looks similar to a real CD cover i believe and now just hope to find a background that will make it look more interesting to look at and bring more colour to the whole cover. I need to becarefull with my background and need to make sure it is suited with the effect i have used on the picture, which is the main thing i am finding hard to find a background that suits and fits in well with the photo.

This is presented on the side of the front cover, this catchs the customer eye and makes them more interested in picking up the CD automatically if they see good reviews for it especially if it is by a well known music company such as NME. If the audience seen 5 stars they would believe it to be very good.

I also have mentioned the a well known and special award which was also won by the artist this year for best new comer into the music industry.

I have used the grey circle to show what genre of music it is to the audience/customer as he is a new artist and may be unknown to many people.

This is the text i decided to use it is a fancy and interesting text to look at. The text involved the artists name 'JUST MUZ' and the name of the album 'SOULFULSTUFF'. It is important that these two pieces of information are easily read and can be seen and noticed.

As the customer often looks for CD through there name and not what the album looks liek as they often do not have a clue. I have used a basic colour which stands out on the background but is quiet a boring colour, but this does mean that the image is more interesting and not the text which is the way i want it. To catch the audience's views by the backround and image and so much by the text.

This is the finished image of the photo i had taken before it. This is what it looked liked after i used the magic lasso tool and had brushed around the outside of the image hiding any bit that the lasso tool did not manage to remove.

This image has been given an effect to match with the background i had planed which was a tiled black background. I thought that having a normal image would not go with the background and also would look a bit boring and not interesting.

Also i have played around with the colouring of the image to make it brighter and to give the actually photo more of a warm colour as in the photo it looked, cold and lacked a bit of colour.

This is the very first stage i took a picture of my artist with some thourght of mise-en-scene, here he has large head phones which are the new style now this helps to show he is a artist and show he is knows about fashion which his fans will follow and copy.

It is a basic photo with a plain background i have used this as i knew what i wanted to do with the photo before i took it that involved using the magic lasso tool to go around his head and only have his head and my own background for my front cover.

Planning for the Secondary Task

The inside cover will involve 1 main image of a studio. It will be a photo that is shot behind the glass looking into an empty studio. Text will be presented infront of the image which will involve the artists thourght on the album, songs and what his main song is about.
The other side is simple and i hope will look effective it will be a picture of an old vinyl record which will be viewed when the cd is out of the case which will be confusing as they are both the same shape and both used for the same thing, just that the cd is the new and modern way of listening to music.

The CD back cover will be very basic again continuing the front cover background through to the back, so as one when viewing it when the case is opened. It involves just the artists name, centred at the top of the cover. The track listing will be presented on the left hand side of the cover in a basic and easy to read font. At the bottom there will be a split where a different colour will be used to seperate it from the background and here it will involve all the information about copyright, production etc. With the bar code situated at the bottom right of the cd cover so it is well out of the way and not ruining the look of the cover.

This is a simple plan of what i hope my CD front cover looks like. I want to keep it basic involving one main image that has been cropped and just a close up of the face of the artist, with me controlling and editing the brightness and levels of the colouring and lighting. A strong image ontop of a simple background which has a pattern to it to make it more interesting to look at and filling more space on the CD front cover. The title will involve a creative and innovative design which will draw the attetention of the auidence, underneath will be the album name in the same font but just smaller.

The Main Task

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUUNVGkcGWc

Production of Main task

To make my music video i used thenew imovie, i found this difficult at first as i was used to the old one. Soon after the first few times of using it, i got better and better and now know how to do a number of things such as add transtitions, blank clips, heading titles, edit the volume, change colouring and cut the clip to only have a section of the clip shown. I am now a confident user with imovie but one disadvantge with it is that there are not as many special effects or transitions compared to the old imovie, which meant my music video wasn't that creative but this was down to the program and lack of equipemnt.

Planning of the Main Task (Music Video)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4W9YFcUb1o

The song i have selected for my music video is Human by Just Muz who is a local rapper in Jersey. Using this song and artist is a great help to me and makes it easy to get permission from him where as i may not be able to if i were to use a famous artists/musican. Also nobody would have heard his music before, so it will almost be down to me making a good video to fit in and work with the song.

My music video will revolve around three scences. One of these will be Just Muz in his bedroom rapping, as this is where it starts for most young rappers they practise behind closed doors. They then go out onto the street to show off ther musical talent to friends and other rappers. So i will show him walking on the streets rapping on his way to a gig. Where the last scene will be of him performing at a gig, which he never thought would or could happen as it all started out as a hobbie in his bedroom writing lyrics and trying to be famous and making music in his bedroom. The final scene will show that he has finally made it and show him and his fans. This final scene will show that he is now well liked and well known for his musical talent in that area and the majority of the fans at the gig are the selected target auidence of a rapper; young teenagers. The clips will relate to the lyrics and have a meaning to it and making it more interesting to look at rather than just having it all of just at the studio/bedroom where it could get tedious and the viewer is more likely to get bored from the video and there for not listen to the music and turn it off, like people often do when skipping through the music channel.

Copyright

My artist is a local rapper and he is not contracted to a company or have any copyright to his songs or album. I have spoken to him if i could use his music and him in my project and he has agreed and has no problem with me using his songs, or using him or his work in my project.

This is the letter i wrote to him and he has replied and allowed me to use his music for my project, this shows that he has no problems with what i am doing and has given me permission to use his song for my video.

Re: Victoria College Media Coursework

Dear Christian Foley:

I am putting together a Music Video for my A2 coursework at Victoria College.

I understand that you are the owner of the copyright in the musical composition “Human” and want to role my music video around your song. I want to use the entire song in the Music Video as the background audio clip for my music video.
Since we are on a limited budget and distribution of the video it will be only seen by students, teachers and the examining board of media studies, I are hoping that you will allow me to use without any charge. If this is not possible, please let me know.

Your signature below, under “confirmed by,” will indicate that you will agree to permit this use without payment of a fee. Please let us know if you have any questions concerning this license. Also would you please let us know as soon as possible if this song cannot be licensed so that artistic changes can then be made. You can reach me at payn@hotmail.co.uk or Victoria College Jersey.

Thank you for your help with this matter and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely,

Charles Payn

Research - Codes and Conventions

Codes and conventions of a music video vary depending on the genre of the music, the mood, and the beat of the song, also can effect the lighting, mise-en-scene and propps etc.

The main general conventions for a Music Video:

  • The artist/band is shown in the video whether this is performing at a gig or concert that they are playing or they are involved in the narrative of the video this could save money for actors and is often done. Also a number of music videos now consist of basic ideas such as just walking and don't have a main storyline/narrative, a good example of this is coldplay where he won award for both his music videos which involved him in rewing for the whole of the video and also when walking along the beach which was done all in one shot, which does go against some people's ideas of the conventions of a music video, but this is seen as the new way.
  • Lyrics of the song influence what is done/shown in the music video for example the lyrics from a song mention a boy playing football then a shot of that would be shown to link in with the lyrics and make the lyrics clear as it shows someone doing that.
  • The pace of editing fits in with the pace of the music. A good example of this is the prodigy alot of their songs are loud and upbeat and alot of there videos involve alot of action and lots of short clips which are shown. What often happens is that the clips involve one shot then from a different angle and then the shot after goes back to the previous angle this prevents the audience from getting bored from seeing one clip for 5-10 seconds.
  • The codes of mise-en-scene/dress reflect can show the audience alot of things such as the type of music they sing and what genre they might be in e.g. lots of cash and bling suggests a rapper. Also mise-en-scene/dress can show us the mood of the song.

The main conventions of a CD Package:

  • A main image has to be used on almost each page of the CD package but the best image should be on the front cover.
  • The front and backcover should use the same background, colours, text to keep the continuity and make it look as one as this is how it will be viewed when the Cd package is shut.
  • The text on the front cover needs to be large, bold and stand out ontop of the background.
  • The front cover is often simple, but it is key that it fill up most of the space on the page to keep it interested and preventing dead space on the page.
  • Often the picture presented on the front cover involves the artist/band and any awards that they have won, or comments from well known sources.
  • The back cover should involve copyright, distribution, production and exhibition information to make the audience aware.
  • The inside page should use the same background, colours, text to keep the continuity throughout and make it look as one as this is how it will be viewed when the CD package is open.
  • Inside page should have one main image with information presented along side it about the artist/band/songs/album etc.
  • The right hand side of the page should be basic as it will most of the time be covered up by the CD and won't be seen often, but still needs to involve colour and image to prevent it looking dull and blank.

The main conventions of a Magazine Advert:

  • This involves one large image that instantly can be recognised with the aritst/band, this could be a picture of the artist/band, a logo which is well known for them or even the same image that is shown on the CD cover.
  • It need to be bold, clear and stand out ontop of a blank and basic background colour.
  • A master head should be used at the top of the page to present the artist/bands name along with the album name, this makes it clear what they are trying to sell and who they are if the audience does not already know.
  • Text should also be used at the bottom of the page explaing when the date of the album is out, the formats you can buy the album on, website information of the artist or company distributing the album.
  • The text throughout the page often uses one main colour this is a simple and basic colour as the image should stand out and the text should be easy to read so basic is often the option.

Research - Target Audience

Questionnaire

I will produce a questionnaire which will give me an idea of my products. A questionnaire will provide statistical analysis which will enable me to produce my music video, Cd package and magazine advertisement to detail of my target audience.

Results

A total of 50 people have taken part in my questionnaire ranging from school friends, teachers, parents and the public. My questionnaire involved a large number of questions but it was easy to complete and only took a matter of minutes, as they were all multi-choice questions and you only had to ring the correct answer.

The questions are all about my products i have to produce but mainly my main product which is my music video with a few questions on and about CD packaging and advertisment of a CD.

Analysis

10. Here this shows that my participants prefer music videos that have a meaning and story to it rather than just seeing a live performance at a gig/show they have performed as there music video. They find it more interesting and relates to the song more and give the song and lyrics more meaning and feeling.

11. This shows that people that watch videos watch it more and concentrate more on the lyrics rather than what is happening in the video. So although the video does play an important part the most important thing is that the song is liked and that the viewer watches the video because of the song rather than because the video is good.

13. This shows me that CD covers don't have to look amazaing and are not the most important thing for the buyer as long as it looks ok, and the music is good. So the CD cover needs to have a style to it and should not be left blank or empty but the most important thing is that the music is good and not so much what the cover does look like but sometimes can have an affect on whether the audience buy the Cd or not.

19. This shows that for my music advert i need to have a poster that is designed well and looks good but also explains and shows all the important and needed information. Their needs to be at least one picture on the advert which could be the artist/band or the cd cover it self and with information around it and it need to fill up a whole A4 page, with no blank spaces.

Research - Similar Media Texts (Magazine Advertisements)

  • This advert is very basic and has a plain background, small writting and not a main image.
  • A symbol is used here rather than a photo it is very simple and is of a black circle with lots of different coloured line in and going through the black circle outline.
  • The artsits name is situated at the top of the page. The text used is very basic and not eye catching, with the first letter of the two words have a symbol rather than the usual simple letter.
  • Black and white are the only two colours used on this page for the text.
  • The picture of the album is shown on the advert on the bottom left hand corner, which is good and shows the reader what it looks like and what they should look out for in the shops.
  • At the bottom of the page tour dates, company names and websites are all shown.
  • This advert is very basic and not very eye catching and is boring to look at with no strong image and the text being small and lots of it.

  • This advert is unliek most with the image only tkaing up a 3rd of the page, and most of the page being used up by large text.
  • The heading is the artists name and it is presented in huge writting with the album name presented below, it has been presented well with a banner being used to keep it interesting and stand out.
  • Again 3 main colours have been used red, white and black. With some of the text having a faded effect.
  • Release date is shown and the different types of format.
  • The picture is in black and white which makes the red text stand out more as it is the only colour other than the basic black and white. The image is not that clear but fits in with the album title.

  • This magazine advert is very effective as the shot is very simple but effective as the light makes us concentrate on the artist in the shot playing the guitar.
  • The picture is dark and this enables the writing to stand out on top of it and they have used white and gold. The gold used fits in with the light streets and highlight the main part such as the artists name the album name.
  • The information is basic and only gives you what you need e.g. the date of release of the album and the formats you can buy it on e.g. vinyl, DVD, CD.
  • The picture fits in with the name of the album 'To warm you through the Night' with the street lights being edited and given a golden glow.
  • The bottom left of the page shows the companies involved in the print and distribution of the album.

  • This advert is very strong and a graffiti design has been used as the main image with the album name ontop of the sketch in a different colour to anything else on the page.
  • The font used has a graffiti style to it and makes it more interesting to look at and to read. This has been done as the background is a red brick wall with the main image also having a graffiti look to it, as these designs and texts are often found on walls.
  • 3 main colours have been used for the text (white, red, yellow), all been presented in the same font and positioned centred.
  • The release of the album is presented large than the other text apart from the band name as it wants you to see it and remember it, so you will remember to go and buy/download it.
  • At the bottom of the page, a website is given.

  • This is the same image used on the album cover, it is very simple with 1 ring blurred into lots of different colour ontop of a a plain background. This makes it look really effective and makes you think about glow sticks and a rave which is associated to the type of music.
  • The ring is very simple but looks interesting as it has been blurred and effect have been used on it with the different colour being used and the brightness on them to make it looks like an unusual object/mysterious.
  • Due to the image being so basic this allows the information to be read easily and clearly. The artists name is presented at the top with the album name next to it in a different colour to make them stand apart from each other and stand out.
  • The title involves bold text with capital letters being used at the begining of every new word.
  • At the bottom of the page it shows the different types of formats you can buy the album, which is good to show as different generations of there audience may want to have it on different formats such as a teenager download where as a older person may prefer vinyll and think about collection.
  • Again the white and grey text has been continued through the page. It has been used at the top of the advert to seperate the band name and the album name, this has also been done to seperate information about the album and the different types of format with that being in grey and the information about the album is presented in white.
  • The website is presented at the bottom of the page in small writing, which is usful information as customers may want to learn and see more about the band such as future gigs, concerts, new songs they are working on and existing work they have done. It even gives them the chance to buy it online and of the bands website so the customer knows the money is going to them rather than the shop.
  • Eye catching words have been used and words that put thourght into your mind which is the main aim of the such as 'out now', 'the new album' all these words make you wnat to buy it.

Research - Similar Media Texts (CD Package)

  • This CD inside package has used 1 colour throughout to make the text, pattern and image stand out ontop of the background colour.
  • The colour used is a black which makes things stand out but it does make the inside page look dull and boring.
  • The CD is the same colour as the background which carry on the continuity and fits in well with the inside page, but i think that it should be colourful standing out in the cover asking to be gotten out the cover and played.
  • The left hand side of the cover has a image of the artist which has been edited and put on a seperate layer infront of the background colour.
  • A patern has been used to divide the text from the image and fill in blank space and adds more to the page.
  • Text is used which is all about the artist and her thought's on the songs and album. This is a good idea and is interesting for it's audience as they get to know the artistsviews of their favourite song, lyrics etc and fills in much unwanted dead space.

  • This inside page has only filled one side of the cover. This makes the CD stand out as the behind it is very plain and boring so this makes the CD look very creative and enthusies what has been done on it, and makes you appreciate it more.
  • There is one design which has been used throughout the inside page with the it being on both one side of the cover and the CD.
  • This deisgn invloves a large bold title which is the name of the album, it has used a funky text which has different gradients of blue on each letter which makes it stand out more and brings it more to life and exadurates the 3d effect
  • A colour scheme has been used throughout both pages, that is blue but they have kept it more interesting to look at with the different gradients.
  • Pattern have also been used and been inbedded into the background colour to give the image more shape and effect and really makes the title stand out with the patterns shooting of the text.
  • Green has also been used as a colour for the patterns and also for the title on the CD this colour is the closest associated colour with blue which is why it fits in well.
  • On the CD the songs have been listed so when putting it into the CD palyer they know which song they want to listen to and which number it is.
  • The title on the CD has been really clever and used the circle on the CD as the inner shape of the o.

  • This front cover is very eye catching as the lines going away from the image makes it look important, looks like an sunshine. Which automatically draws your attention to the main image which looks like a tree with a hand mixed up and edited to it.
  • The artists name are very clear as it is situated in the centre at the top of the cd cover and is in a white text. Again a graffiti like text has been used with some parts of the text missing and faded less white.
  • The title of the album is centred in the middle of the page and is not clear or easily read as the colours used in the background are used for the text and the text has been given a 3D look to as the begining of the text is close and fades away in the middle and ends up being close again, which is clever and works but the text just can not be easily seen or read.
  • The back has been split into two sections with the use of colours, a dark red had been used and the copyright, bar code and the people that designed the CD cover etc are mentioned with the music company's logo shown.
  • The songs are listed and number and are all aligned to the right hand side of the cover, this fills the blank space with a sun shining towards the songs which fills up most of the space on the back.
  • Red is used for numbering the songs, which is a colour that is easily seen and stand out and the track title is shown in a bold black which is easily read on a faded background colour.
  • The CD also has a sun shining on it which is the theme of the CD package and it is used throughout the cd design.

FrankMusik is a new and upcoming artist that varies his style of music and is associtated with dance/pop music but also has been known for working with his rappers e.g. Tinchy Stryder.
  • This is a simple album cover it involves a close up of the artists face, this is very simple but effective CD package as it shows the arists and also is interesting to look at due to his hair etc, also you could recognise the album through seeing him.
  • The photo is in black and white which also contrasts with the black background. The picture is clear and really stand out infront of the dark background.
  • The artists name is shown in bright pink which is unusual but this colour gives the album cover that little bit extra as it stands out soo much and is not often seen. The front is done in a funky graffiti style which is now known and always used when advertising his name, album, shows etc. The text is positioned centrally and fits the whole of the width of the album cover which means there is no empty space left which is good.
  • The title of the album is positioned below the artists name in a small fine white font in the same font but jsut small and positioned to the left unlike. The white text is in front of the black background which makes it well presented and easily seen.

  • This CD package has a theme all the way through it having the same colours used on the front and back of the cd case but in different pictures. The semiotics of these colours are warm, heat and summer time.
  • The album cover is in a different colour which makes it stand out infront of the cover which is important as this picture has a lot of things happening in it, so the text is need to stand out. Green and black are used as they are bold colours and both are easily seen ontop of a redish background colour.
  • Pattern have been used to make it more interesting and fill up any large spaces which could effect weather it is considered a good cover or a bad one.
  • A bar code is used and postioned alongside the copyright, company name and everyone associated with the band and making of the CD cover. This is done vertically which is different but it works as it seperates this information away from the picture and the track listings, it is easily seperated just through using a darker red.
  • The songs are listed on the back and number in a green circle so the buyer knows what the song name is and what track number it is. Their is a lot of space on the back which is not very good but this is not so important as the most important thing is having the track listing.
  • The CD also uses the same pattern which are on the cover using the black and green for the name of the album.

This is Akon's latest album called 'Freedom', he is again another well known artist who has made many big hits and been in the chart often.

  • The album cover has been made with two seperate pictures, one of the background, the sea and the other of just the artist Akon.
  • This cover gives it a fresh look with the clear ocean and the blue skies, this could symbolis the type of music such as slow, calm and relaxed.
  • The mise-en-scene used from the artist is unusul as he is wearing a smart suit that is not recognisable near the sea side, and is more associated with in towns or cities. The sunglasses represent the sunshine and the reason for being near the sea and this can be shown from the sun reflection in his sunglasses.
  • The title of the album is small but all the letters are in capital letter to make them stand out also the text is a different colour to the artists name, with the album name smaller but easier to read as it is horizontally presented. The colour of the text is blue like the colour used from the sea and it stands out due to it being posioned in front of the sky which is a lighter blue.
  • The artists name is also positioned on the left hand side of the CD cover, in a large, fine text which is presented in white but it is postioned vertically which is harder to read and would not be easy read from a distance.
  • The album title is presented in the 'K' of the artists name, which is clever and draws your attention as it is the only writing that is presented on the CD horizontally, so you immediately read it.

This is the world famous rapper Dizzee Rascal, who is huge in the music industry and this is his first album, 'Boy In Da Corner'.

  • It is very basic and not much is happening on the cover it shows the music artist, his name and the title of the album.
  • Involves 3 main colours, with a bright yellow background which automatically draws you in and catches your attention, with the person in black which makes him stand out infront of the background.
  • The title in the top left hand corner is in a black stencil/graffiti look. The title of the album is very hard to see as it is in yellow with a orange outline this and could affect the customer from finding the cover.
  • The mise-en-scene used is very simple and basic, as this is his first album and he was not big until this album was produced he is wearing normal clothes that he would be seen in trakis, nike and hoodie. This would not be the case now as he is a big artist and has since his first album he has produced many great songs with 2/3 making number 1 in the chart.

Taio Cruz - Break Your Heart

http://www.muzu.tv/taiocruz/break-your-heart-music-video/279239?country=gb

The video is all about a couple and they do not think they should go out or their relationship will last, due to them always being with the other sex and being rich in flash cars, nightclubs and on yacht boats with 3/4 girls/boys all around him, they both get jealous but still love each other and wants to be with one another. At the beginning she is following him and he is not that bothered about her but then starts seeing her feelings for him when is surrounded by other girls but concentrates on her instead showing his love for her has grown, this is also the case when she is surrouded by men and he is just watching her and at the end they are together on a boat like a couple and now have stopped making one another jealous.

The artist is lipsinging in the video, lots of camera shots are used mainly the master shot to show which environment they are in and also medium/close up shots of the main two characters to show their facial expression. The video is edited together with lots of shots from different environments, and showing one another and their actions to make each other jealous, shot reverse shot is used as well to make sure and show the viewer that the character sees the other characters actions to make the other one jealous.

Leona Lewis - Run

http://www.muzu.tv/leonalewis/run-music-video/55768?country=gb

This video is very simple and basic it is situated in one place so it was quick to make due to only having to film in one environment. It was cheap to do as it was doen in a forrest and natural place which had no cost to rent out or on propps etc.

The artist lipsings the song throughout the whole video, it is a slow song it this is shown from the video from not much happening if this was not the case then it is unlikely that the video would work with lots of quick, shots of different people or places due to the beat and speed of the song. The camera editing in one stage when walking down a long track/road it fades out and the next clip is where she is seen in the forrest, the lighting throughout the video is dark and as the song goes on she moves closer to a light and the light is shone brighter, this also works with the song as the end of the song is stronger and louder than the begining where it is quiet and slow. A high angle shot is used to show her situtated in the middle of know where in the middle of the track. When in the forrest medium shots are mostly used and close-ups when the main chorus is played and she singings it loud and meaningful and the close-up is used to catch the meaning of the lyrics and her emotion.

Little Boots - Remedy

http://www.muzu.tv/littlebootscdlikvntdf/remedy-music-video/281251?country=gb

This video is set in a music studio i can tell this by the propps used such as a keyboards, volume control, glass window etc. The lighting is quiet dim in the video as expected in a music studio with one main light. Her clothing and jewellery she is wearing is silver and diferent to a normal dress or jewellery they are both weirdly shaped and this fits in with the effects used and the camera zooms in with her large triangular clip in her hair and it is then zoomed out into a special effect. Effect are used on her face, to exadurate her singing, the keyboard/hands to show her playing and even just her lips to show her lipsigning to the song.

The editing is very quick and we see her lipsinging to the song when lying on her keyboard this is the longest part of editing then we see lots of shots in a short space of time, these are all the effects used in the editing of her face,l ips, playing of the keyboard and lighting in the room from a birds eye room. In the effects the lighting is very important and lights are flashing all over the place in the effects part which enthasises the effect as, so much is going on with the bright lights and the weird effect so it is hard to keep up and it looks a little bit weird.

The Prodigy - Omen

http://www.muzu.tv/theprodigy/omen-music-video/61723?country=gb

This video is a very simple and basic idea, it is of a live gig that the band have played, it involves lots of flashing lights, effects, showing the artists signing, the drummer hitting the drums and the crows going crazy.

The song is very fast and upbeat so the editing is very quick and any one clip does not stay on for long, it is all edited very quick to keep up with the song and the beat. The lighting used varies from green, red, blue or yellow. The camera quality is not great as a steady camera was not used but this adds to the type of video they have used and as it is live having it steady would not fit the critera for the song nor the video as it is at a live gig where the viewer will know if he has been to a gig that you never just stand still when seeing someone like the prodigy and you are jumping all over the place.

At the begining, the middle and the end the song is inturrupted due to the type of instrument used in the song a xylophone is used and the footage from the gig stops for a few seconds and the camera moves in on a girls holding and playing the xylophone. The camera moves in on the girl and it finishes with a close up and moves into the gig. This automatically strikes the viewer as a young girl would not be associated with the prodigy.

Bloc Party - I Still Remember

http://www.muzu.tv/BlocParty/i-still-remember-music-video/470?country=gb

This video is situated on train, it is very clever and plays with the viewers mind, the camera moves down the train with each time a singer from the band walking towards the camera and down the train. The people sitting down on the train are often the people from the band and usually the person walking down the train with 4/5 duplicates of them sitting down each doing something different from listening to an i-pod, reading the newspaper, holding instrument or playing with a football, just what you would expect and see in normal life.

The video uses computer editing due to a camera not being able to duplicate people, blue screen is used as the train is always the same. The editing is continuous in stage one where it follows the signer walking down the train through each carrage, and also when it stops and starts videoing from outside of the train and we see it going through a number of trains side way on, but with the same but just at different times and in different scenarious such as whether he is on his own with friends and also the weather outside liek sunny, snowing or raining.

The begining and the end are from real life and are real train stations the first clip shows you what you would naturally see when leaving a train station looking out the back and then the camera moves back into the carrage. Mise en scene is used for the first person we see is a man in a officer suit looking for people to check tickets. At the end the video zooms at out the last carrage where the band is playing and it zooms out into the country where the train is lost and stops in the middle of know where.

Task

1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, with two of the following three options:

• a website homepage for the band.
• a cover for its release on DVD.
• a magazine advertisement for the DVD.

I have decided to this for my A2 coursework as a music video, CD package and advert all links in well with my AS coursework last year which was to make a music magazine. So i already have a background about this industry how it works and what the codes and conventions are, although the main part of the project is a music video i would say this is my weakest part but i will work hard and look in detail about the codes and conventions of videos and look to make a really good one which hopefully will get me a high grade.
